What is Emotional Intelligence?

 

Emotional Intelligence is the knowledge to identify and regulate one’s emotions. Additionally, it also refers to be able to identify other emotions. Emotional Intelligence includes three skills. Firstly, it is the ability to identify and label one’s emotions. Secondly, it the ability to analyze those emotions. Finally, the last skills include the ability to manage one’s skills. When it means to manage emotions, it refers to the regulation of emotions. There is no test to determine the emotional intelligence level. However, studies have a link between job performance and emotional intelligence.

 

An intelligent person is aware of his/her emotional states. Furthermore, these states can range from anger, frustration, and sadness. But the important point here is that the person also knows how to manage them. Such individuals are well aware to fine-tune their emotions. Many would love to know how they can increase emotional intelligence in relationships.

1. Practise Self Awareness

 

Self-awareness is a way to improve emotional intelligence in relationships. It involves understanding you’re behavior. Additionally, it comprises of being aware of your emotions. The first way to start is to start by knowing what you are doing. Second, how you feel regarding it. Finally, looking into a side of you that you aren’t aware of.

 

2. Channeling Your Emotions Well

 

Emotions are a part of life.  For a fact, you can never get rid of it. They are a part of human behavior. Additionally, that is the way we are built. However, you can channel them in a positive way. In other words, distract your emotions into ways that don’t affect you or others.

 

3. Learn To Motivate Yourself

 

Situations arise where you might feel depressed. You might feel lonely or simply not in the mood to do anything. This is the time to identify your emotions. Once you identify, pick and motivate yourself. Try to distract yourself from situations and work on other things.

 

4. Recognize Others Emotions

 

It is important to understand others too. To build healthier relationships, it is crucial to understand their emotions. Every relationship requires a form of understanding. You can start by connecting with people more. Additionally, empathizing is also a good way to know people better.

 

5. Combine Values With Emotions

 

You need to be clear about what you want in life. The reason being that is where your emotional energy is directed. Besides, it is important to know your values too. When you are aware of your values, you can direct emotions in that path.

 

6. Find Stress Relieving Techniques

 

The first step is to identify your source of stress. Next, find ways to deal with it. You can either meditate or practice yoga. Additionally, deep breathing is a great option. There are multiple ways out there for you to try.

 

7. Calm Down Before Judging

 

We are very quick to judge others. At times, it happens subconsciously that we don’t realize it. Take a pause and look at what is actually stressing you. Is it any other issue? Are you stressed out at some other issue? Be calm and identify the cause.

 

8. Give Kindness More Priority

 

We all love to win arguments. Isn’t it? Once in a while, try showing some kindness instead. Not every argument is a win or loses the deal. Prioritize kindness over winning the argument. It will change the way you deal with relationships.

Learn to accept criticism to gain emotional intelligence in relationships. We love positive feedback, but what about negative feedback? Take every feedback as a way to improve yourself. 10. Sit With Your Feelings

 

It is very normal to feel feelings of hurt. Allow yourself to sit with your feelings and identify them. Mainly because it will be difficult to completely combat emotions. On the other hand, it is good to understand such emotions. Once you become aware, it becomes easy to deal with.

 

11. Accept Your Weaknesses

 

We all have flaws. Nobody is perfect. Moreover, nobody can be perfect. Every individual has their own strengths and weaknesses. However, if you wish to improve, accept your flaws. Additionally, you need to work on them. Do not dent they don’t exist. Work on developing your weaknesses.

 

12. Be An Active Listener

 

There is a difference between listening and active listening. Similarly, it is important to actively listen. It is one of the great skills that you can inculcate. Pay attention to what is being said and analyze it. Once done, then choose to respond. Additionally, repeat what has been said to show you paid attention.

 

13. Admit When You Flawed

 

Big quality is to admit when you are wrong. However comfortable it may seem, make sure to admit. Each one of us commits mistakes. Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with committing mistakes. However, make sure to never repeat it.

 

14. Listen To Suggestions

 

It is crucial to listen to suggestions and feedback. In other words, respecting other people’s opinions is a huge step. Besides, it helps you improve your emotional intelligence in relationships. Even though you may not agree to it, show respect to the least. However,  the piece of information may help in the future.

 

15. Label Negative Emotions

 

When you are feeling emotions, it can very hard to cope. In other words, emotions can be hard to relate to. Hence, it is important to identify and label your emotions. When you do so, you get an idea for the stress in you. Additionally, it is also a good way to exercise your mind.

 

16. Question Your Opinions

 

We all have a set of opinions that define us. Sit back and think upon them. In other words, analyze if these opinions are accurate. Additionally, will they help you in life? Question yourself why you still hold on to them. This is key to improve emotional intelligence in relationships.

 

17. Learn To Say No

 

It is great to be understanding and compassionate. Additionally, it is equally important to know when to say no. Besides, it helps you know your emotional limits. This too helps in building your emotional intelligence.

 

18. Switch Off Reactive Impulse

 

If somebody hurts your feelings, what do you do? Defend, hurt them back or detach yourself? These are your reactive impulses which you should know. Choose to be calm and composed during such a situation. This will improve your emotional intelligence in relationships.

 

19. Recognize Your Motivations

 

It is important to understand your motivations. This will help you in the long run. When you yell at someone, reflect on the situation. Are you stresses over something else? Are you exhausted? Did you have a long day? Analyze your behavior, in addition, know your motivations.

 

20. Accept That Feelings Change

 

It is important to accept that feelings change with time. Not only yours, but the feelings of people around you also change too. They evolve and so does their beliefs. Similarly, you too are bound to go through the change. In order to be emotionally intelligent, you need to accept it.

 

Being emotionally intelligent is a great skill that you can learn. Additionally, emotional intelligence is important in life. These are the skills that help you both personally and professionally. However, you can learn them only with patience and practice. They make you confident and make your self aware too.
